The origins of the name Notting Hill is unknown but theories have arisen suggesting that it derives from a manor in Kensington called Knotting-Bernes.
In the early 19th century the area was known for its production of bricks and tiles and it was at this time that development began. In the 1840 roads and houses were constructed.
Notting Hill in the past was home to Afro-Caribbean immigrants.
Notting Hill has an annual carnival in August also known as the Notting Hill Carnival which attracts around a million people.
Portobello Market attracts many residents and tourist alike. It established itself during the nineteenth century; the market trades mainly in the antiques business and the open day are Saturday. Fruit and vegetable stalls also dot the market further north.
