Before its development, Lancaster Gate consisted of tea gardens but soon that changed due to Sancton Wood who in 1857 designed Lancaster Gate.
There is a possibility that Lancaster Gate was named after the Duchy of Lancaster and some notable people stayed at Lancaster Gate like Napoleon’s son Prince Eugene Bonaparte, Lytton Strachey a critic and biography lived there as a child.
