| HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT MAYFAIR |
Mayfair is the area bounded by Oxford Street to the north, Regents Street to the east, Piccadilly to the south, and Park Lane & Hyde Park to the west. The name Mayfair comes from a yearly fair held in the area, now known as Curzon & Sheppard Market and previously known as Great Brookfield. The May fair took place every year between the 1st of May to the 15th May. It is recorded that the first fair took place in 1686 and continued until the mid 18th Century.
The area developed and became the desired residence for many of the aristocrats of the time, partly due to its closeness to St James Palace.
Today it is still one of the most prestigious address in London and although many of the buildings have been greatly modified, the remnants of Georgian architecture are still very visible. |
