| HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT OXFORD STREET |
Previously the Street was known as the King's Highway, the Road to Oxford amongst other names. In 1713 Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford, acquired the land to the north, heading toward Marylebone Road. He married to Lady Henrietta Cavendish-Holles and their daughter married William Bentinck, Duke of Portland. The families gave their names to many of the surrounding Streets in the area.
In the 18th Century the "Oxford Street" name was established and became renowed with shopping. The Street stretching from Marble Arch to St Giles is one of the longest shopping Street in the world, measuring just over one mile. . |
